Antique French Fabric Stamps from Provence
These are old fabric stamps I found in Provence and are from an era when fabric was hand stamped in repetitive blocks by hand.
This block printing technique originated in India, but began in the 16th century in France. It consists of carving a pattern in relief in a wooden board. This pattern will then be coated with dye and then applied to the fabric.
Block printing in France was first practiced in Provence, better known as the Provencal Indians or Marseilles and subsequently spread with all the textile manufacturers spread throughout France.
In this case, both patterns are for a very delicate print. One has small lavender flowers (6.5” x 5.5” x2”) and the other is a lavender plant (7” x 5” x 2”), both very old as the design is actually carved into the wood.
These are most likely late 1800s/early 1900s.
