Antique French Gilt Bronze Furniture Mount, 13" Louis XVI Foliate Swag Appliqué, c. 1900
A wonderfully decorative fragment of old France, with every trace of its history left intact.
This antique French furniture mount—or applique de meuble—features a rhythmic series of geometric frames joined by graceful leafy swags. Pendant foliage ornaments each section, while remnants of gilding appear through the darkened metal surface and areas of natural green verdigris.
The restrained symmetry and classical garland motif are characteristic of the Louis XVI Revival, suggesting a date of approximately 1880–1910. It was likely created to ornament the front or apron of a commode, cabinet, buffet or another finely made piece of French furniture.
Now detached from its original setting, it could be incorporated into a furniture restoration, mounted as an architectural accent, displayed as an objet in its own right or used in a creative decorative project.
