Antique French Voltaire Book, Le Siècle de Louis XIV, Circa 1866

A wonderfully atmospheric French edition of James Fenimore Cooper’s celebrated adventure novel, Le Dernier des Mohicans—The Last of the Mohicans, a story of the French and Indian War in the American Colonies, that was popular in France as well as the US.

Published in Paris by L. Boulanger as part of the Bibliothèque Dorée, this petite antique volume most likely dates from the final years of the 19th century. Its richly marbled paper-covered boards combine shades of deep blue, ochre, cream and burgundy, complemented by a burgundy leather spine with simple gilt bands.

Inside is an especially striking illustrated presentation page followed by a delicate floral title page—beautiful remnants of the elaborate book design associated with France’s Belle Époque.  There is also a similar page at the back.

This is Tome I only and is therefore not the complete novel. Its sculptural binding, petite proportions and wonderfully aged surfaces make it particularly appealing as an authentic piece of French library décor.

This antique book is in fragile, heavily timeworn condition and is best suited for display or gentle handling. The leather spine and marbled boards show substantial rubbing, scratches, worn edges and surface losses, with faded but still attractive gilding.

The front hinge is significantly split, with loose pages and gatherings near the front. Pages are age-toned with scattered foxing, marks and edge wear, and a former owner’s name appears in blue ink.
