Reproduction French Tarot de Viéville Cards – C. 1650 Historic Parisian Tarot Deck

Step into the card rooms of 17th-century Paris with this striking reproduction of the Tarot de Viéville, originally created around 1650 by Parisian master cardmaker Jacques Viéville.

One of the rare complete French tarot decks to survive from this period, the original is now preserved in the Bibliothèque nationale de France. It dates from an intriguing moment before French tarot imagery became standardized into the familiar Tarot de Marseille tradition.

The Viéville deck has a wonderfully distinctive character all its own: expressive woodcut-style illustrations, archaic lettering, earthy ochre and brick-red coloring, unusual card orientations and mysterious variations on familiar figures. Even the image later known as The Tower appears here as a tree beneath which a shepherd and his flock take shelter.
