Antique French Hat and Coat Rack, Wooden Porte-Manteaux, French Entryway Decor, c. 1900

From a time when nearly everyone left the house wearing a hat… and this one is a beautiful one with a great patina.

This handsome antique French porte-manteaux was cleverly designed to hold both hats and coats. The two tall upper arms suspended hats away from the wall, helping protect their shape, while the lower curved hooks held coats, jackets or scarves.

Each substantial iron fitting is finished with an aged brass ball finial and a broad crescent-shaped brass support. The fittings are mounted on a beautifully shaped wooden backboard with rounded ends and a recessed decorative border.

Dating to approximately 1900–1920, it may once have hung in the entrance hall, office, café or cloakroom of a French home or business. More than a century later, it remains both useful and wonderfully distinctive.

Condition:

This piece retains a beautifully aged, authentic surface. Expect scratches, finish wear, tarnish, oxidation, small marks and other evidence of more than a century of use. The brass has been left unpolished to preserve its original character and patina.
