Antique French Louis XV Style Carved Wood Mirror – Possibly 18th Century, Carved Wood Rococo Vanity Mirror, French Boudoir Table Mirror
The beautifully aged, very old, carved wood frame appears to predate its wooden backing and easel, which were likely added later. The frame displays old cracks and historic repairs, including visible repair work on the reverse. Based on its construction, carving and considerable age, the frame may date to the 18th century, although without provenance I cannot definitively date it. It dates back at least to the 1800s, which would be Rococo Revival.
Time has softened its once-gilded finish into a beautifully dark, warm patina, with glimpses of old gold still catching the light across the carving. The mirror stands on its wooden easel back, making it especially lovely on a dressing table, chest or vanity.
And this one wears its history openly. The carved frame (and very heavy hardwood... I would guess mahogany) has several age cracks and evidence of old repairs—including repairs visible from the back that themselves appear to have considerable age. (Even the repair is OLD!) Despite these, the frame displays beautifully. I've photographed these areas closely so there are no surprises.
Rather than detracting from the piece, I think they are part of what makes it so appealing: this isn't a reproduction made to look old. It is an antique that has been used, repaired and kept for generations.
Measures approximately 14.5" tall × 8" wide
A wonderfully romantic piece for a French-inspired bedroom, dressing table or collected cottage interior.
