The base tells you everything. Stamped 75 DEC / 16 R PDP 753 — a 75mm Canon de campagne shell, made at the Rennes Arsenal in 1916, the year of Verdun. Lot 753. Someone fired this. Someone else picked up the empty brass and made something from it.

The body is covered in bold, sweeping repoussé relief — large abstracted leaves, possibly iris or calla lily, pressed from within in broad gestural strokes. Less delicate than typical trench work. More confident. The top has been cut and folded into deliberate flame-tipped tabs — a crown of sorts, medieval and striking.

The patina is deep warm bronze with heavy oxidation — a century of life on this piece. There is a 3" hairline crack down the back of the casing, but I have price it accordingly.
